Republican Challenge to Universal Childcare Denied in Court, Hull to Make Cuts if Elected Governor

ALBUQUERQUE - Today, the New Mexico Supreme Court denied an appeal challenging the state’s universal childcare law. The appeal was led by losing gubernatorial candidates Duke Rodriguez and Steve Lanier and failed state House candidate Zac Anaya. 

After a previous loss in a state district court, Republicans made another attempt to cut childcare by appealing the state’s Supreme Court, calling the program ”unconstitutional.” The appeal was shut down and New Mexico will continue to provide childcare for children across New Mexico. 

Gregg Hull has been critical of universal childcare, threatening the cost-saving program that New Mexicans rely on to make ends meet. Not only that, Gregg Hull failed to denounce the Republican lawsuit, despite DPNM challenging him to do so multiple times. 

In a recent interview with the Rio Grande Foundation, Hull references SNAP, Medicaid, and universal childcare as programs that the state can cut.

Despite constant Republican opposition, universal childcare in New Mexico has already helped thousands of New Mexican families deal with rising costs, participate in the workforce, and set young New Mexicans up for a strong start. 

“It’s a shame that Republicans continue to attack New Mexico’s families and children for a desperate attention-grab, and that Gregg Hull never spoke out against the lawsuit, instead being critical of the program,” said DPNM Spokesperson Daniel Garcia. “Attacking our first-of-its-kind universal childcare shows how self-centered and desperate Republicans like Gregg Hull are for attention and that they don’t care if their agenda hurts New Mexicans.”

This also serves as another reminder to Duke Rodriguez that he owes DPNM $10,000.
